does anyone know much about the recent elections?
i haven't been keeping up with swiss politics at all and one of my european tribe friends blogged that the Nazi party has come to power in Switzerland. !!!! ????
after poking around a bit in Google, i think she may have been exaggerating, though racism and immigration do seem to be big factors right now.
i'm a swiss citizen, but have never lived there. but now i'm starting to wonder if i shouldn't be reading up on the politics an looking into how to vote.
but mainly, i just want to know what's going on. does anyone have links to good news sources on swiss politics?

Re: recent Swiss elections
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 12:34 AMyep, its official: 28% of the swiss voters hate foreigners..
as you put it: the NAZI's have come to town..
(see my blog entry, or the thread in the ((neuropean)) tribe,
the SVP have gained 9 seats of the Bundesparlament of (ca) 140 seats.. further increasing their majority of the recent 4 years!!
what is worse, their campaign tactics were : no policy, just mud slinging.. and riding the point about foreigners being to blame for crime and social problems..- their campaign fliers contained no political promises, other than putting a ban on foreign immigrants.., and highlighting crime rates etc..
Now they are ttrying to get hold of the environment presidency, or the social one, where they hope to make big savings (i.e. invest in the short term power solutions like nuclear, or cutting the IV and AHV payments..)- its shocking...
On a positive note: the green party has gained power too, standing now by 9,5 seats in parliament,- and several Ständeräte (responsible for a Canton) that have been elected are Green.
What has gone missing is the middle of the road.. those parties have all shrunk.
In my humble opinion have the SVP deliberately infiltrated antagonists in a campaign march just a couple of weeks before elections, where left wingers were expected to peacefully campaign against SVP's anti foreigners campaign..- and the march was hijacked by vandals and rioters who set fires and threw stones etc.. which of course was exploited to make it seem like the political left was just a bunch of rioters..
I am sure this was an orchestrated affair, and yet again caused the fearful citisen to vote right wing, since the campaign posters promised them that the SVP will "make Safe" their threatened country..
A tactic that has worked so well in the US..
When will people stop letting themselves being deliberately frightened!!-
There are few countries so safe as Switzerland.. it is ridiculous..
and as for trying to make savings in AHV (pensions)/IV(Invalidity Benefits),- this is also one of the richest countries in the world.. so why save where the people are needy???
The stupidity is unbelievable..
Cheap Insurance salesman tactics running a population.. -

Re: recent Swiss elections
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 10:21 AMTell me about it...
I wouldn't call them Nazis, for me the are the No!- party - because the never really tell you what the are for, only what they are AGAINST!
Not a healthy attitude...
Well now the definitely can't play the outsider card anymore and shout around, now they have to actually show if they are able to work constructively. Which I doubt...
I also wonder how people still believe that they are the small people's part when the partie's big shots are all rich bosses, starting with Mr. Blocher himself. -

Re: recent Swiss elections
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 7:37 AMyeah do that. that free magazine for ex-pats (is it the swiss revue?) is also really good..- it should inform you of the new government etc..
oh: found it on the internet..
www.revue.ch/en/content/
mail voting is easy,- know who or what to vote for is hard from afar..
I found this site useful for getting to know the issues and the candidates:
tagesschau.sf.tv/wahlen07/...wahlboerse
my daughter found it in english, but I cant see the button just yet.. -

i hope people will post important news here, though. i don't have any immediate family left in switzerland, and i lost touch with my friend that lives there.
